Philosophy and Motorcycles

Philosophy and motorcycles are two of my favorite things in life. This blog will be bits of wisdom gleaned from a misspent youth and an adventurous dotage. People who like/love wisdom or motorcycles, classic or modern versions of either, are welcome to visit and comment.

I have been married to the same lovely woman for decades. We have one son, two cats, and live in rural Wisconsin, USA. I ride and rebuild motorcycles, and I am semi-retired. Favorite bikes are Yamaha XS650, FJ1200 and Ducati 900SS. My wife is a home care nurse. I am a Myers-Briggs INTP. She is ESFJ. Our son works at the Apple store in downtown SF and is teaching English as a second language in San Francisco, no grandchildren.

It doesn't seem like it could be 35 years since I married Norska but it is that long. It also doesn't seem like I could be 67 but I am. If I were to design humans I'd have them reach the age of 25 and stay there for 50 years and then just drop dead. Knowing when you would die would also enable us to make a celebration of it. We could even stage special things like no speeding tickets after age 74 and 10 months. Looking around a nursing home I have to laugh when people refer to life as "intelligent design." Some intelligence. If the designer was intelligent people wouldn't work their whole life and only be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor when they were too old to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Ever see a 70 year old man in a speedo? What a nasty graphic image that is. And as much as humans like sex what about the available partners for someone in their 70s? Seen a 70 year old woman in a bikini lately? Look at a 70 year old sports car or motorcycle and you see why men like old vehicles. They age a lot better than we do and can be rebuilt to look and run like new. Now that's intelligent design. Wheels of Italy in the city this weekend. I repainted the sidecar rig so it isn't all black. It looks nicer to my eyes. I need to fettle a bit on it today but I have nothing else scheduled so it will be fun. I took it out last night and realized that the slow speed jet is plugged again. It was difficult to get away from a stop sigh. Darn thing won't pull the hat off my head below 2000 rpm. Luckily cleaning the carb is easy now that I'm using a Solex 30 pict carb on the Old Wing. When the carb is correct it runs wonderfully. I'll post the original 4 carb setup on ebay soon. I put new kits in those carbs but never did get them to where it ran properly. The single carb idea was a good one. I also got the Harley mufflers mounted on it. Looks and sounds better than it did with the crappy old mufflers I had as a temporary setup. Be well, do good, keep in touch. LN
